During this period of renovation and construction at the site, the exhibition program at Kansas City Museum is adapting and changing. We are currently unable to utilize our exhibit galleries. Therefore, we are making our collection accessible to the public in a variety of ways – in print, on the web and through lectures and programs at the collection storage facility.
Exhibits In Print

What: “Faces of Corinthian Hall”
When: Sunday, February 21
Corinthian Hall is the largest and most robust example of Ecole des Beaux Arts architecture, which incorporates decorative elements including representations of the human figure, in our region. Found in the capitals of columns, tucked into mantles and peeking down from ceilings, elements of human and animal faces can be found represented in many materials across the estate.
On February 21 we will release our latest “exhibit in print” documenting the many “faces of Corinthian Hall.”
Historic preservation consultant Elizabeth Rosin presents a detailed inventory and narrative description of these remarkable decorative elements. The publication will join the “Restoration of a Window” publication produced last year and continues the process of documenting the building’s preservation.
At 3 p.m., join the Friends of Kansas City Museum and take a hard hat tour through Corinthian Hall with Museum Director Christopher Leitch and Rosin and discover the faces for yourself.

What: “What We Did for Love: AIDS Walk T-Shirt Collection”
When: April 18, 2010
What we did for Love: AIDS Walk T-Shirt Collection
The grass-roots health-care movement that responded tot the HIV crisis can be documented in many interesting ways. Since 1988, AIDS WALK in Kansas City has grown into a vehicle for public awareness, health education and fund-raising. Colorful commemorative T-shirts are produced every year.
This spring, we will release a new Exhibit-in-Print documenting the collection and the AIDS WALK movement in Kansas City. The publication will be issued in the popular “Pocket Museum” format, and will be sold in the Museum Visitor Center Gift Shop. Proceeds will benefit AIDS WALK Kansas City.
This important collection was recently donated to the Kansas City Museum by one of the original organizers of the event, Mike Sugnet. AIDS WALK and the Memorial Program, led by long-time volunteer and chair Terry Newell, raised more than $400,000 in 2009. The T-shirt collection is emblematic of this vibrant, ongoing community effort.
The “Exhibit in Print” Program
Our “Exhibits in Print” program was inaugurated in 2007 with “Planning for the Future”, an overview of the Museum’s interpretative plan. Following in 2008 have been “The Long Family and Corinthian Hall”, ”Loula Long Combs – Fashion Paper Doll Collection,” Natural History on the Head and “Pocket Museum.” On Feb. 15, the Museum will be releasing its latest Exhibit in Print, “Restoration of a Window.” Upcoming 2009 Exhibits in print will include a PowerPoint presentation on the “Secrets of the Mansion”.
The “Community Curator” program of Kansas City Museum invites historians and history educators from the Kansas City community to share their perspectives on artifacts they choose from the Museum collection. Community Curator lectures are presented the 4th Tuesday of each month at 6 p.m. in Town Hall of Union Station, allowing the actual artifact to be presented with the observations of our Community Curator. Community Curator essays are published on paper and on-line.
