Union Station’s significant Western Expansion project is underway and represents the largest enhancement project to the Station since our doors reopened in 1999. Specifically, the project will modernize the streetscape that welcomes visitors in the front of the Station and provide a bridge to transport drivers and pedestrians to the existing parking garage on the north end of the property. Additionally, one of the most anticipated features will be an extension of Science City to the west that will feature outdoor interactive exhibits and a sprawling events plaza for community-based events. Every element of the massive project is designed to improve guest experiences and enhance Union Station’s status as THE place where Kansas City connects, creates, discovers and celebrates.
Phase one of the expansion, which includes improvements to the grounds and parking area in front of Union Station along with the new pedestrian and vehicular bridge connecting the west parking garage with the Carriage Pavilion, is schedule to be complete by end of May, 2016.
Part two of the expansion, which includes a significant redesign of the West Plaza area between Science City and the parking garage, a new entry directly into the Theatre District, and interior improvements for ticketing and a multi-use large function area will follow a timeline still to be announced.
Union Station is a remarkable success story in so many ways. More community events. More world-class touring exhibitions. More recognition – from international authorities – of our spectacular Science Center. Most importantly, more visitors – just like you – coming to experience all that is uniquely Union Station Kanas City. Thank you for your ongoing support. You are the reason we are vibrant and on track like never before!
